Gillian Iverson – Dance student
Alex is a wonderful teacher. She is able to think of multiple ways to explain steps until she finds the one that works for you and is very encouraging and positive.

“Miss Alex is an inspirational teacher
to both my girls. They have made real progress since joining the school this year
and they have fun!”
Autumn Star – Dance student
“While I have done ballet at this school I've made lots of friends. It has been very fun and I am looking forward to more years of continuing to dance and exams at the School!”

Amelie Kuet, Age 22
I took ballet classes at ABS for about ten years through some of the most formative years of my life. Dancing was just fun and energising, but it also brought me peace and stability to get me through times when, as a teenager, it sometimes felt like the world was ending.
The lessons I learned and things I achieved are so much more than how to tendu and sew ribbons onto pointe shoes. With the support of my teachers and classmates, I discovered my self-confidence, my creativity and musicality, and my inner peace.
I moved on from ABS to go to the University of York to study English Literature and I recently completed my masters there, all the while still dancing through life (occasionally sneaking back into classes when term times lined up). I've had the confidence to try new things at university (I took up ballroom and Latin dancing!) and not let fear of failure and imperfection hold me back.
Self-discipline and responding to constructive criticism in ballet class helped me thrive independently at university, and I graduated from my BA with a first class degree.
I may not dance as often or as regularly as I did at ABS, but dancing remains an innate part of my identity and something I continually turn to wherever I go. ABS holds a special place in my heart as a safe and magical space.

Famida Ayub – Dance student's parent
“My daughter only started part-way through term at that start of the year, but with Alex's teaching method and patience my girl grew so much. More confident, more happy and loves to dance. Thank you Alex, couldn't recommend this school any higher!”

The younger children get distracted easily, especially when they want to show off new skills to their parents, so we allow parents to watch at the end of each half term. We find this gives them a few weeks to build up their skills and create something to show at 'watching week'. From Grade 1 upwards parents may watch classes and are welcome to take note of any corrections given. We do ask that parents are respectful of the atmosphere of the class and do not talk or distract their child and that mobile phones are on silent.

Yes, because without the elastic sewn on, children's feet will either slip out of the shoe as they jump or worse still, the child will 'claw' their toes to help keep her foot in the shoe.
Generally speaking from the age of 11 or 12 years or when their ankles are strong enough. Dedicated classes are created for children going onto 'pointe'.
